The Media in Education Trust’s mission is to support the positive development of education in Southern Africa and Africa and specifically to equalise access to quality education.

Over the years, The Media in Education Trust has broadened its focus from print media in education to a wider focus on media in education, and now to the use of a wide range of media and resources in education. A main focus is to help school communities, and particularly those in disadvantaged rural areas, to access, manage and use a range of media and other available resources effectively to meet their own learning and development needs.
Key activities include facilitating the development of teaching and learning support materials by teachers; implementing pilot projects and doing research into approaches that improve the delivery of quality education in rural and disadvantaged areas; developing appropriate, attractive and user-friendly educational materials and ensuring that they are distributed effectively into schools, with support for users; developing and offering accredited training in resource-based teaching and learning; promoting media literacy, critical thinking skills and democratic citizenship values; helping to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS and helping school communities to cope with the debilitating effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Strengthening schools communities so that they are able to provide a caring and supportive environment for their children, particularly orphans and other vulnerable children.
Over the years, The Media in Education Trust has developed a number of distinct models that help it to achieve its mission and vision and support its main focus. These are the Resources and Information Network (RAIN); education resource centres supporting rural development and schools as centres of care and support. The Media in Education Trust has effectively managed and implemented several large-scale projects integrating teacher training, support for school management, materials development and the printing and distribution of materials.
