TB Care Association was founded in 1929 as a social support group for TB sufferers in Cape Town. We offer community based TB and HIV care, workplace TB care, rehabilitation and health promotion. It is the policy of the TB Care Association not to operate in isolation but to involve all stakeholders in all of its activities and to ensure that there is no duplication of services throughout its area of operation. Our community based TB care programme provides access to treatment for TB patients on the street where they live. We have a team of 500 TB Treatment Supporters who have been trained to administer TB treatment across the above mentioned districts.
TB clients who are employed and are able to continue working, are accommodated in our workplace programme which provides training for supporters in the workplaces, information sessions for management and health information for fellow workers. Our Paediatric project aims at providing a supportive community based infrastructure for TB children to facilitate their discharge from Brooklyn Chest Hospital. This proposal outlines a strategy for the maintenance of an existing community based TB care programme and the expansion of the programme based on need.
All work undertaken will be in partnership with the health authority, the communities and any other relevant Non Government Organisations and Community Based Organisations operating in the area. Community based TB care is a recognized effective and cost effective TB control intervention. TB Care Association has been involved in community based TB care since the concept was first introduced to the Western Cape by the CHASA TB Alliance in 1992. Over the years we have developed a sound infrastructure in the management of community based TB care. Our model of community based TB care is promoted by the National Health Department. We are committed to caring for the carers and capacity building, our treatment supporters is key to our modis operandi.
