Services for the disabled in disadvantaged communities have in the past been lacking, and for many disabled people living in these poor areas, there are few alternatives to a life of inactivity and neglect. Tragically, if left untreated, disabled individuals rapidly deteriorate and become increasingly limited in their ability to gain even the slightest measure of independence.
Elim Home is dedicated to caring and providing for only the most severely intellectually and physically disabled children and young adults. The organisation provides optimal care and focuses on maximising the potential of the children and young adults at the Home. Nursing staff provide 24-hour care that is supplemented by other therapies and that aims to enhance the level of independence of each child.
Children at Elim Home come from all three Cape Provinces from as far afield as Upington, Port Elizabeth and George. Although Elim Home is a project of the Moravian Church of South Africa, children from all denominations are admitted and cared for equally. Children range between the ages of 5 and 26 years with IQ’s below 35. Today there are 49 children and young adults in care, with a waiting list of 25.
