We exist to lessen the suffering of abandoned, injured and abused dogs and cats by rescuing them, providing for their well being and placing them into loving homes; reduce the numbers of unwanted animals by providing free sterilisations in disadvantaged communities; provide humane education to the people to create an awareness of the moral and ethical treatment of the animals whose world we share.

The Emma Animal Rescue Society is a Pro-Life organisation whose core aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abandoned and abused domestic dogs and cats. Sterilisation and primary health care of animals in disadvantaged areas, including education, is also a priority. With The Emma Animal Rescue Society pro-life policy animals are only euthanised when ill with no hope of recovery. Our kennels are situated in close proximity to the areas that are the primary focus of The Emma Animal Rescue Society activities, like Masiphumelele and Red Hill Informal Settlements, and Ocean View and Mountain View Townships. The desperate need of the animals in the areas mentioned has resulted in us growing at a rate not anticipated.
At our rented kennels we care for over 250 rescued animals, providing them with food, shelter, veterinary care, exercise and positive interaction with people. Prospective owners are interviewed to ensure suitability, and each home is visited to confirm compliance with our conditions. The Emma Animal Rescue Society is very proactive in finding homes by taking animals to craft markets, exhibitions, and other venues. We respond to calls from the public, throughout the Peninsula, when they encounter injured or abandoned animals requiring help. We believe in the importance of education in animal care and endeavour to teach the pet owners how to care for their animals.

- The Emma Animal Rescue Society was thrilled when the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) chose our society to be part of their Community led Animal Welfare (CLAW) Programme
- As one of the most serious challenges faced by animal welfare organisations is widespread animal over population, this project has sterilisation as its focus
- The project involved the purchase and equipping of a mobile clinic together with the training of an animal welfare assistant
- The hard work involved in getting this project up and running has brought its rewards, in that our sterilisation rate has increased and we are more visible and widely known in the community
- The number of animals sterilised in the last 12 months was 755
- The Emma Animal Rescue Society introduced the 'Open-Paw' programme, a set of minimum mental health requirements to provide for the essential needs of shelter animals
- This dog rehabilitation programme gives us a perfect opportunity for our staff and volunteers to educate the public and provide them with the necessary skills to look after their dogs properly
- It also helps our animals form positive associations with all kinds of people, which make them more adoptable
- In the past 12 months, we have successfully placed 1046 rescued animals into loving homes

- One of our main goals is to own the property we are currently renting and we are negotiating the purchase at a price of R1, 500, 000
- Our objective is to upgrade the animals' accommodation taking into account factors such as noise level and comfort
- A long held goal is to establish our own sterilisation and primary health care clinic on our premises and employ a veterinary surgeon full time
- We currently use local vets who charge reduced rates, but to increase the number of sterilisations in the community and to provide affordable veterinary care for the homeless animals at our kennels, we need our own vet and clinic
- We aim to sterilise the majority of the animals in the disadvantaged communities in which we work, getting the problem under control, thus enabling us to reach out to other areas
- There are people in the disadvantaged communities who care about the plight of some of the animals they come across and we want to help them help the animals
- An education programme on our premises where interested people can learn first aid and what to do about an animal in need as well as basic health care is one of our plans
- The people working at The Emma Animal Rescue Society have a passion for animals and we have the reputation in the Southern Peninsula and beyond of going to great lengths to help in distressing circumstances
- We will never loose the compassion and great love we have for all animals and work tirelessly to achieve our goal of making The Emma Animal Rescue Society one of the best animal shelters in the Western Cape
