LEAP represents a solution to one of South Africa's key problems: the acute shortage of skills, particularly amongst the previously disadvantaged. LEAP has a clear focus to create and maintain a structured learning environment that will allow each young person to develop fully as a human being and to develop a positive, caring lifestyle and appropriate work ethic.
Our aim is to enable each student to gain access to tertiary study opportunities, to be successful in their chosen career path and to develop as a socially responsible citizen of South Africa. Our students do this by graduating from the school with a university exemption; with Science, Maths and English on the higher grade.

South Africa will continue to face a severe skills shortage as a result of the poor educational foundations, particularly in the hard sciences, of most students who attend school in the townships. Past endeavours, such as the provision of tuition support in township schools, have not delivered the desired results, and the only thorough solution is one involving "full immersion" tuition. LEAP Science and Maths school is a full-time school offering almost double the normal classroom time, focusing on maths and science education, in addition to other learning areas.
The students of LEAP range in age from 14 to 20 years old and attend school on a daily basis from 8:15 am to 5:15 pm from Monday to Friday, with voluntary school on Saturdays. The majority of the students come from Langa. We have over 150 students divided into 8 classes including two classes in our "Foundation year" - a year of preparation for grade 10 entries. Each student is required to study seven subjects: compulsory subjects are mathematics, science, computer studies, English and Xhosa; one subject is chosen from history, business economics and accounting. One compulsory lesson of life orientation takes place once a day.
The school has an independent board of governors drawn from the education and business fraternities. LEAP welcomes and is keenly assisted by volunteers involved in various aspects including student tutoring, teacher mentoring, opportunity creation, workshop facilitation and fund raising.

- Our first Grade 12 class wrote the matriculation exams at the end of 2005. We achieved a 93% pass rate and over 60% of the Grade 12 students achieved a university exemption pass, 33% with merit and all with maths and science on the higher grade.

- LEAP is a partnership between four parties: - Langa and other disadvantaged communities where there is a real need for better education.
- Foundations, private donors and corporates, who are the core providers of funding for the school
- Diocesan College (Bishops), which shares its facilities with LEAP
- Western Cape Education Department, which has registered the LEAP School as an independent school, as well as providing a subsidy.

- The goal of the school is to create and maintain a structured learning environment that will allow each young person to develop fully as a human being and to develop a positive, caring lifestyle and appropriate work ethic.
- The specific objective is for each LEAP student to graduate from the school with a university exemption; with science, maths and English on the higher grade. This will enable each student to gain access to tertiary study opportunities, to be successful in their chosen career path and to develop as a socially responsible citizen of South Africa.
- Additionally, the objective of the school is to establish an environment where positive role models are created and where successes are shared and celebrated, thereby breaking old models associated with disadvantage.
- LEAP also acts as a social responsibility node by working closely with community leaders to strengthen initiatives and projects working in township communities.
- LEAP is committed to providing teacher mentoring programs and sharing our resources with township teacher’s form partnering schools. Our students are encouraged and taught to tutor other children in the townships.
