Food & Trees for Africa
Mission Statement
Food & Trees for Africa's mission is to contribute to a healthy and sustainable quality of life for all through environmental awareness and greening programmes.
Executive Summary
Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) is South Africa’s premier greening organisation that actively engages in the development, management and promotion of greening programmes, including sustainable land use management and food security through Permaculture.

Founded in 1990 by a group of individuals concerned with the state of South Africa’s environment, FTFA’s work has been recognised and commended by most government departments and even the United Nations, who appointed FTFA as a laureate in the Global 500 Roll of Honour.  The organisation has won numerous awards and continues to strive towards helping all communities throughout Southern Africa achieve a greener, healthier more sustainable quality of life.

Much of FTFA’s training centres around Permaculture, which is a radical approach to food production and urban renewal, integrating ecology, landscape, organic gardening, architecture and agro-forestry in creating a rich and sustainable way of living which produces more energy than it uses.
Past Year Achievements & Highlights
During 2004, FTFA continued to implement one of the most important outcomes of the WSSD, that of forging partnerships with business and government in the pursuit of creating healthy and economically viable places to live and work.  Among other things FTFA:
  • Was a Finalist in the Mail & Guardian Greening the Future Awards
  • Won the Institute for Housing South Africa Gauteng and National award for Community Upgrader of the Year
  • Currently has 43 active projects
  • Celebrated 10 years of the EduPlant programme
  • Was the only NGO to be a finalist in the ACCA
  • Sustainability Reporting Awards
  • Distributed over 32 000 Trees for Homes  in 122 communities
  • Distributed 11 000 more trees at 58 Arbour Week events
  • Facilitated 300 community workshops which trained 1200 community members
  • Facilitated 57 EduPlant permaculture workshops which were attended by over 3 800 educators from all over South Africa
Programmes

With the support of funders and the endorsement and co-operation of various national, provincial and local government departments, Food and Trees for Africa is involved with implementing three large programmes, under which all its projects fall:

  • Trees for Homes is a programme to ensure the planting of trees and increased environmental awareness that leads to cleaner and greener suburbs for low cost housing developments. It enhances the participation of low-income communities in local level decision making and helps to improve environmental management capacity among both local authority representatives and communities. Linked to Trees for Homes is The Urban Greening Fund
  • The Urban Greening Fund was created with seed funding from the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and is a basket fund, supporting partnerships with organisations concerned with the fact that the majority of the population live in degraded and environmentally impoverished areas with little food security.  The Urban Greening Fund aims to develop partnerships to facilitate Permaculture food gardens at schools, clinics, and community centres; to plant and maintain street trees and parks and to spread environmental awareness and education.
  • The EduPlant Programme has become a point of convergence for Permaculture activities throughout South Africa and has had a major impact on schools, national government and many communities in South Africa in a most positive and beneficial way
  • By training educators in the methods of Permaculture, EduPlant has motivated schools and their communities to address poverty alleviation, greening, food security, sustainable natural resource use and management, capacity building and skills development
  • Schools that had never heard of Permaculture before are now finding that they can increasingly meet the nutritional needs of their learners. They are schools that have unique living, learning laboratories that facilitate the effective delivery of the outcomes-based curriculum in all the learning areas
  • EduPlant 2004 held 57 workshops for approximately 4000 educators across the nine provinces. In addition to the standard workshops, 5 day workshops were held on site at 18 schools across the nine provinces. During this time, Permaculture professionals visited 150 schools delivering vegetable seeds and educational materials, assisting them with any problems with their food garden projects and to select the 63 finalists. All 63 finalist schools won the opportunity to attend the exciting finals, three days of permaculture, environmental, performing arts and music workshops
  • The finals of the 2004 Woolworths Trust EduPlant Programme are designed to recognise the development of schools’ gardens over time.  The Emerging Category is for schools that have recently implemented a Permaculture project and are entering the programme for the first time. The Intermediate Category is made up of schools that have been finalists before, but have not yet won in a Category. The Advanced Category is comprised of schools that have maintained a Permaculture project for more than a year and that have been previous winners of EduPlant. Nine schools are also chosen as winners in their respective provinces. More than R200 000’s worth of prizes were distributed to all the finalist schools, these include the trip to the event, R500 cash for each school, as well as numerous educational resources, seeds and gardening tools
