Heifer International - Pigs, Cows, Sheep, Chickens or Food Gardens

Animals play an important role in meeting the nutritional, agricultural, economic and social needs of people.

Products such as milk, eggs and meat provide vital protein which is lacking in the diet of many rural people and the surplus production provides a valuable source of income. Animals also provide valuable manure for fertilizing crops, thereby improving yields.

You can sponsor the purchase of an animal for a family in need.  In all instances we provide families with high quality, young, sexually mature, healthy animals to ensure high productivity over a long period and would be glad to use your animals should they meet these requirements we will gladly use them.  All recipient families are well trained in aspects of animal husbandry, thereby ensuring that the animals are well cared for and adequately nourished.

DONOR ITEMS NEEDED
Chickens: A 18 hen laying unit which provides a family with an average of 12 eggs per day costs R1,000.00.  This includes a well designed, spacious cage complete with feed trough and water system, 18 laying hens, a 50 kg bag of feed as well as training in the management of such a unit.  Eggs are an excellent source of protein and are ideal in preventing malnutrition, which is common among children in rural South Africa.
Cows: A pregnant dairy heifer costs R5,500. After calving the heifer would easily produce an average of 10 litres of protein and calcium rich milk per day. The sale of milk as a source of income is very viable with a cow. The cost covers the purchase of the heifer and a portion of the cost of training the family.
Food gardens: Just R300 will enable a family to establish a food garden which can supply fresh vegetables throughout the year. The food garden works well with a donation of an animal, since the garden is fertilised using the animal manure. Vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals needed by our bodies.

Goats: A pregnant dairy goat, which is able to produce 2 litres of protein and calcium rich milk per day once the kid is born, costs R1 200.00.  This cost includes the purchase of materials to build a suitable shelter for the goat as well as suitable training for the family.

Pigs: a sow (a mother pig) can give birth twice a year and can produce a litter of 6-10 piglets each time. Within a year the piglets are big enough to become mothers or slaughtered for meat. Pigs are able to eat a wide range of foods, including low cost waste foods. A pregnant pig that is suitable to give to a family would cost R800. This cost includes the cost of materials to build an appropriate shelter and to provide training.
