Greetings! Every year on the 15th of May, the United Nations observes the International Day of Families. It is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the importance attached to families as the first circles of societies rippling out into the wider world. In the family nest, we first realise our own humanity, and first make sense of the humanity of others. No wonder then that the UN Declaration from the Special Summit on Children, September 2001 states: "All institutions of society should respect and provide protection and assistance to parents and families so that children can grow and develop in a safe, stable and supportive environment." www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za is commemorating the International Day of Families by celebrating the work of one of our registered NPOs, The Parent Centre. It is an opportunity for us to highlight that www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za is far more than a funding portal because The Parent Centre is one of the many South African NPOs who give out their substantial energy and expertise to the general public. The Parent Centre promotes positive parenting and actively builds the capacity of parents, caregivers and teachers. By supporting people with children, The Parent Centre encourages the well-being and self-esteem of both child and parent/caregiver. In this way, they work to stem the rising tide of child abuse, victimisation and neglect. The Parent Centre enables the establishment of loving, nurturing familial environments that ultimately strengthen communities and society. With twenty-three years of dedicated work behind them, The Parent Centre is rich in experience and expertise. You can access this knowledge and support through the Parenting Pages This month we have made a number of The Parent Centre articles available on the site including topics such as '10 Things Parents Do Right', 'Back In Charge', 'Being Together', 'Teens Move in a Pack' and 'Mother-Baby Bonding'. You can also email any personal parenting queries via www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za and an expert from The Parent Centre will respond to you directly. You can further the valuable work of The Parent Centre by giving a gift of support to your family members and friends who are parents and caregivers. What better way to honour a mother on Mother’s Day or celebrate the birth of a new baby.
All proceeds from these Gift Certificates go to The Parent Centre's Mother-Infant programmes in disadvantaged communities. |

GreaterGood donors are keeping a home fire going at Baphumelele Children’s Home I, Rosalia Mashale, would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating funds to enable us to purchase of three gas burner stoves which will be used to cook in our respite centre / soup kitchen. Baphumelele Childrens Home has engaged itself to help the infected teenagers who are being rejected at their homes due to the stigma of AIDS. They come to our kitchen on a daily basis to get the breakfast, lunch as well as afternoon snacks they need, while on the other hand we will closely monitor their medication. In our little research done in all the townships we have found that most of the teenagers die very quickly as soon as found infected because of poverty, rejection as well as taking medication on empty stomachs, not having balanced healthy foods, the same frustration made some to abandon their babies and so on. At the present moment we have managed to take care of some teenagers – some very sick, some doing well – in our premises whilst we continue to raise funds to put up a structure to provide respite to these teenagers in the longer term. |

We are delighted at the generosity extended by so many of you in response to our Donate-a-Book campaign which started in April to celebrate World Book Day. As most of us know, poverty excludes so many people - especially children - from the enrichment that reading brings. Being able to read, and having access to books, plays a critical part in the unlocking of potential in a human being. A brighter, better future for all South Africans becomes more likely if we are busy now raising generations of thoughtful, independent life-long learners - and reading is the key to that! We will be continuing this campaign until Literacy Day in September when the sponsored books will be distributed. If you haven't yet donated your book, please join this campaign.
