Newsletter | May 2006GreetingsMany of the commemorative days of May bring to mind health, family and nurturing. Among others, there is World Red Cross Day on the 8th, World Move for Health Day on the 10th, International Nurses Day on the 12th and the International Action Day for Women's Health on the 28th. Of course, the big UN day of the month is the International Day of Families on the 15th of May, and South Africa's Children Protection Week starts on the 29th of May. |

Theme of the MonthThe Future is Nurtured by FamiliesAs nurturing families are the looms where a country's future is woven, so dysfunctional and disintegrating families unwind the very fabric of society. In South Africa, poverty and HIV/AIDS wreak havoc on a vast number of families. Where family structures have been broken down, communities need help from the nation as a whole. The non profit sector plays a vital role in delivering services to enhance the abilities of adults to provide safe, nurturing communities for our children. In response to the AIDS crisis many new and effective non profit organisations have been founded to help vulnerable communities care for orphaned and vulnerable children. You can help strengthen our country by supporting the work of a bona fide non profit organisation.

It is so easy to give a South African child a joyful experience of reading. The small gift of a book makes a big difference in the life of a child. You choose if you would like to donate a storybook for a pre-schooler, a book for a blind child or a starter library for a poor school. This campaign runs up until World Literacy Day in September.
