Define the volunteer requests that your organisation will be promoting at the Giving Exchange.
Abalimi will encourage visitors to the Giving Exchange to volunteer their time and skills to Abalimi and its sub-projects in a variety of ways.
Currently, Abalimi is seeking individuals who can help to revise and improve Abalimi’s Resource Centre. Abalimi would like these volunteers to improve the hard-copy library system and to create a digital library system. In addition, Abalimi would like these volunteers to update the organisation’s database contact list and to conduct further research for the iShare Database. Abalimi is therefore seeking individuals are skilled and experienced in one or all of the following fields:
- Librarians
- Databasers
- Resource centre administrators
- Researchers
This is a specific project that would require volunteers to assist until the project is completed. This project will help Abalimi immensely, as systems will be created that will enable Abalimi staff, visitors and other researchers to access documents and information quickly and easily. Updating Abalimi’s contact list will help the organisation with its public relations and fundraising, and help with the iShare Database which will enable Abalimi to network with a number of other organic service providers throughout the country.
Abalimi is also always happy to host volunteers who would like to conduct any hands-on work in the field. This would involve working together with Abalimi’s beneficiaries and helping with the actual implementation of their gardening projects. People who have knowledge of plants, gardening and environmental issues would be most welcome. However, Abalimi would also be happy to host volunteers who have no such knowledge, but are willing to assist and learn. Volunteers assisting in this way could help for any length of time that is suitable for them. Help of this nature would be most beneficial to Abalimi, as the organisation’s Fieldworkers carry a very heavy workload and would appreciate some assistance. Through these activities, the volunteers will be able to learn about the micro-farming movement and to liaise with the various role-players.
In addition, Abalimi always welcomes any volunteers who could help with any fundraising or administrative activities. Individuals who have experience in these fields would be most welcome, as would volunteers who are enthusiastic and willing to learn.
As can be seen in our wish list, Abalimi’s sub-project SEED also requires volunteers to assist with a variety of activities. SEED would be most grateful if individuals who have the necessary skills and experience to carry out these activities could offer their assistance for these specific projects.
Define your Do It Day proposal.
Due to the success of Abalimi’s 2005 Do It Day activity, our organisation would like to propose a similar Do It Day activity for 2006.
Abalimi would like to propose that the volunteers spend the day in the field, assisting with the actual implementation of Greening and/or Urban Agriculture projects.
On the day, the volunteers will assist Abalimi’s beneficiaries and Fieldworkers with a range of practical activities, such as compost-making, weeding, planting of vegetables, pruning and the planting of hedges. This will greatly assist Abalimi and the projects, as it will enable the members of the projects to conduct the activities quicker, and the volunteers will be able to share their knowledge and skills with the project beneficiaries.
Abalimi will most probably be able to accommodate up to 10 volunteers on the day. While it is not necessary for all of these volunteers to have gardening experience, it would be helpful if some of them have some knowledge about gardening.
