What specific projects, campaigns or aspects of your organisation will you promote at the 2006 Giving Exchange?

By awareness raising campaigns about HIV/AIDS and STI’s and health promotion by dissemination of information, the establishment of support groups, promoting and establishing home and community gardens and development and empowering parents on HIV/AIDS. Also, by providing counselling services to the infect and affected, health visits to early childhood centres (crèches), inspection to check the condition of buildings for sustainability for pre-school children and refer for immunisations to clinics/health centres.

Training of volunteers on home base care by counsellors to handle and offer bereavement support, provide life skills and peer education from grade 7 to grade 12 pupils, with emphasis on abstinence and developed rural environment. To educate them on the use of clean water, pigs to be enclosed in clean area and chickens in fowl runs.

How will your organisation fit and help promote the theme 'giving is not just about money' at the 2006 Giving Exchange?

Amatola HIV/AIDS & STI’S intervention project is a community based non profit organisation registered with Social Development Department in Pretoria.

Define the Wishlists that your organisation will be promoting at the Giving Exchange.

The rural communities are disadvantaged and as an organisation,  visiting these child development centres, children have no toys during playtime except going outside and use swings which are impoverished by use of old tyres.
  • Toys will give the children enjoyment and develop their skills and prepare them for pre-school
  • A draw filing cabinet will be appreciated for use by 4 fieldworkers and volunteers who have no filing cabinet at the moment for filing their reports. The staff will be able to have a drawer to keep their records in
  • Fabric cut offs could be used and given to elderly or middle aged females or creches to sew patchwork blankets. This will improve their sewing skills and theywill feel useful to help their children and grandchildren and the kids will feel warm during winter
  • A computer or laptop for 4 field workers to compile reports
  • Digital camera for field workers to make photos for the work that they are doing in rural communities example home and community gardens, crèches and home base care volunteer work
  • A copy machine for the office - it is difficult for the office when we have to ask the nearest office or pay. It is very expensive for the office because we use the copy machine almost every day for our volunteers use.

The computer will assist the field workers in speeding up their reports rather than using the one computer that our office is using. The copy machine will be great for the office to have their own, rather than running around to make copies and the digital camera will be great to monitor the progress on our work we are doing, to be sent to our relevant sponsors and also to keep photos for our archives.

Define the volunteer requests that your organisation will be promoting at the Giving Exchange.

The project has volunteered its time, skills and it’s energy to educate the rural communities by conducting awareness campaigns about HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases and support those infected and affected.

Training of community volunteers give them skills and develop them to sustain the project. The whole exercise involves travelling from 10-65 kilometres between each village and without an organisation vehicle, it's impossible to reach at least two villages a day if using public transport that travels to King Williams Town morning and late afternoon daily and on rainy days, roads are not in good maintenance.

Most of the time training is not possible because funders at most times do not allocate for training and these volunteers receive no stipends at time.

To establish and facilitate support groups for the infected and affected through counseling sessions by our professional staff and are able to disclose their status. Volunteers also help development of these communities and support groups and sustain the education and development introduced like home and community vegetable gardens and home based care. Referral of those who have been observed having deteriorated to clinic/hospital to have their CD4 count and be put on ARV’S drugs.
