Case for Support Need: The Home was started as a result of a survey conducted by the Institute for Community Services. This survey showed that out of a thousand persons living with disability, two hundred and thirty had mental handicaps. Many of these were further physically challenged. Another study, conducted by the Medical University of South Africa indicated that these types of disability were more prevalent among black population. This may be attributed to many years of deprivation under the apartheid. A care facility thus became a priority for the Gauteng Government. The situation has since been exacerbated through the effects of HIV/AIDS, and the failure of the market and government to provide adequate infrastructure to address this need. The family support structures are simply not there to provide the care in this situation. The Social Context of Our Children Our Children are from various backgrounds. A few are from middle class families, others come from townships around Johannesburg, such as Soweto and Alexandra, and many are from the surrounding rural and former homeland areas. Most of our children are from a very poor background; some have lived for years with their families in corrugated iron shacks. 40% of the parents are unemployed. Often the household is headed by a single parent or relative. In some cases the father abandons the mother during pregnancy, which results in mother being house bound to care for the child. In these cases she becomes dependent on financial support from her extended family. Many of the institutions that cater for mentally challenged children are sustained through family fees. They are located in urban areas and provide care for the economically better off in society. Our care programme is relatively unique, in that it provides care for lower economic strata of society, who are most vulnerable Established Infrastructure and Projects We have well established infrastructure from which to provide the childcare. The Children We care for 176 children, who are accommodated in seven units. One unit is temporarily open at the moment, but will soon be filled. The children have an average chronological age of 14 years; however their average mental age is 7, with disabilities ranging from moderate to profound. The conductive education programme is unique to S.A.: This programme was developed in Hungary and aims to help the children achieve independence in their daily functioning, including; bathing, dressing, feeding and mobility. It is holistic and treats the child as a whole personality. We have a partnership with the University of Utrecht (Prof.DR.A Vermeer) to introduce the programme. Some of the children are accommodated in the special School at Sizanani. Shortfall At present we have a shortfall of funds for the 2005-2006 year. In the past we have relied on donations from the founder, who has since April 2004 retired. It is for this reason that we are trying to expand our donor base. Our other business units are adequately funded. Your assistance in adding to our funding base will be greatly appreciated. Funding We are currently funded by numerous donors including The Department of Health, The Sizanani Village Trust, Kindersmissionswerk Aachen, and Liberty Foundation & De Beers. The full detail of the budget will be made available on request. The budget has discrete cost lines which can be funded in accordance with preference of a donor. REFERENCES 1.
