Saartjie Baartman Shelter
Cause: The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children
Approximate Total Cost: R 10000.00

The Saartjie Baartman Shelter offers safe accommodation to 20 women and their children for three-four months, during which time they participate in counselling, psycho-educational workshops and job skills training. The school-going children are placed in neighbourhood schools and the preschoolers are looked after by the Shelter's Child Care Worker in our creche.

Some women, who would benefit from a further six-nine month stay while getting themselves back on their feet, are able to move into the four second-stage housing units. A further six will be built in 2006. As most of the women have few or no financial resources, they and their children are provided with the necessary toiletries, clothing and food. These items are all for the benefit of the Centre's clients and will help them build self esteem and confidence, give them a chance to get back on their feet and enable them to offer greater stability to their children.
