We are using a bilingual model to teach numeracy to grade 1 and grade 2 classes in English-medium schools. This model requires every learner to have parallel text material in English and one of 10 other official languages. Average size of classes is 42. Average no of languages in each is 8.
The model is being developed and evaluated and the in-house teachers are being trained as we go along. The next stage requires every learner to be able to work from his/her own 2 textbooks in every maths lesson.
We are currently selecting material and photocopying it to produce bilingual worksheets. This is cumbersome and timeconsuming and can only be done for one lesson per week. Having full sets of textbooks will make it possible for the home-language to be used as a back-up for understanding in every lesson and, most importantly, it will make it possible for the in-house teachers to work independently of us (a key objective of our organisation).
