To enhance teaching and learning possibilities within the Natural Sciences
Cause: Western Cape Primary Science Programme (PSP)
Approximate Total Cost: R 10000.00
Province: Western Cape
The Western Cape Primary Science Programme (PSP) works with under-resourced primary schools in township areas and rural communities. Most of these schools have very limited budget to resource their science classrooms, leading to an impoverished learning environment for their learners. While the PSP develops low cost materials for schools, there are a number of key items that would greatly enhance teaching and learning possibilities within the Natural Sciences.
Learners and teachers in the schools where the Primary Science Programme works seldom have the opportunity to work with this quality of resource and therefore struggle to develop an understanding of the challenging new curriculum topics such as fossils, evolution and astronomy.
Stuff We Need
A Set of Primary Science Programme Learning Resources
These have been described in detail above. In our experience, in the context of resource-impoverished schools, when each teacher owns a set of our materials they are inspired to teach far more science and to teach it more effectively.
Pupil Participation Science Kits
These kits were developed by us in conjunction with Rutland Industries who now markets these at R6000 each.  The secure steel cabinets contain all the equipment needed to introduce an investigative approach which is crucial to the primary science curriculum.  Many of the items can be used across the curriculum to enrich Learning Areas such as Mathematics, Social Sciences and Language.
Science Reference Materials
In order for learners to imagine the world of science, let alone to take on the research projects required by the new curriculum, it is crucial that they can access good quality information and images such as those that are found in reference books, videos and magazines.
