Volunteer Venture SA was established in 2002, a brainchild, after a number of consultations with civil society organisations, youth organisations, other unemployed people and various community groups. The results of the declarations made by different volunteer organisations during the International Year of Volunteers (IYV), 2001 in Switzerland, Geneva, where the founder of the organisation presented a paper on “Volunteering and Social Inclusion: The South African Perspective”, prompted the formation of Volunteer Venture SA as platform to take volunteering to a new level.
The International Year of Volunteers did a great deal to encourage societies to look at their own volunteer sources and to mobilize them for public good. There is, however, a need to ensure a more active follow up of the commitments made during the IYV to ensure an enabling environment that allows volunteerism to grow and maximize its contribution to national development. From 2002 -2004, Volunteer Venture existed as a virtual, undertaking consultations, identifying gaps within the volunteer sector and formulating a strategy that will take volunteerism to a new level.
Thus the motto: “Volunteering for Sustainable Development and Excellence” Volunteer Venture is creating an enabling environment whereby the contribution of volunteering in development will be significantly increased and recognized, bringing the much needed change in our society. Properly tapped, volunteering has a valuable role to play in contributing to the achievement of the MDG’s, Nepad priorities and to the national action plans.
