Do It Day: Teaching children to take Professional Photographs
Cause: Rena Le Lona: We are with you
Province: Gauteng, Soweto

The children will be taught how to use a camera and they will create a photo album of their life at present.

How will it be accomplished?
We have 60 children. We require 6 to 10 professional or competent photographers. Each will work with a group of 6 –10 children. They will first learn the rudiments of taking a photo. They will then go into their community and take a number of photos of their choice which document their daily lives and the people in them.

Ideally they would return to the center and print out the photos. However this might not be possible in one day. Therefore they submit their camera-films and a day later they receive their prints and then altogether the children make a small photo-album of their lives.

Our children are AIDS orphans. Creative expression is our focus for empowerment. This exercise will give the children the ability to photograph and perhaps develop this as an art form. They will be able to record their lives, thus building their sense of self-confidence and roots. They will be doing what children with parents usually do- their parents keep a scrap-book or photo albums of their lives. This will benefit the children and their extended family.

Beneficiaries: who are they?
Our children are AIDS orphans between the ages of 8 and 15. They attend the Creative Centre three or more times a week during school and daily in the school holidays. Our vision is to meet their emotional, spiritual, intellectual and physical needs via exposure to the Arts.

Their ability to create a photo album of memories of their childhood is a point towards their developing the ability to chart the progress of their lives. In this way they take control of their future. At the end of the day ( or 2 days) each child will have a small album which records the photos of the people and places in their lives. They can share this with their friends and families. It will give the children an increased sense of their uniqueness

What are the key challenges you foresee?
The key challenges are the following:
  • Finding at least 10 photographers who are prepared to spend a day with us.
  • Persuading KODAK to sponsor us with disposable cameras and persuading a print company to print our photos at a minimum rate.
  • Finding sponsors who will sponsor a photo-album for each child.

What will it take to achieve this?

We require 10 experienced photographers capable of imparting their knowledge with patience and skill. They need to be at the Centre by 9.00am and will be with the children until 3pm the same day. We are looking for sponsors for a child. Each child requires a sponsor to the tune of R141.00. We therefore need 60 people to offer us R141.00 each. If you sponsor a child you will have the chance to meet that child and see her/his photo-album or even be in it!

  • 1. 60 photo albums @ R20 per album = R1200
  • 2. 60 disposable cameras @ R40 per camera = R2400
  • 60 spools of film @ R26.95 per spool = R1617.00
  • 27 prints per person x 60 children x R2 per print = R3240

 TOTAL: R8457.00
