Aims of the Giving Exchange

  • The Giving Exchange helps to make South African philanthropy easier, more effective and more personal
  • Non profit (or social profit) organisations can build their strategic capabilities and access new sources of funding and expertise.
  • Individual and corporate givers can see the work of a wide range of organisations so that they can explore, compare and select whom they would like to support based on their own interests.
  • The Giving Exchange promotes transparency and rich feedback loops that are essential for performance-based investment decisions.
  • The Giving Exchange aims to foster a giving community comprised of highly effective social profit organisations supported by committed, long-term individual and corporate givers.
Transform yourself into a 21st Century Social Investor
You want to contribute to a better South Africa, but how do you ensure that what you give actually results in the improvement of people’s lives?

You need clear, reliable information so that you can choose to give to a Cause that is highly effective.
At the Giving Exchange you can see for yourself what work is being done by South African development and social profit organisations. You can talk to the people involved and ask them whom they help, how they help them and with what results.

The best that you can give may not be about money
Many South African Causes could work far more effectively if they had more access to expertise, skills and other resources. If you understand their needs, you may find you can easily make a positive impact without making a donation of money. Your time, skills, previously-loved goods, your eBucks and your membership loyalty points are all assets that you can wisely invest in a better South Africa. At the Giving Exchange you can browse the Wishlists, volunteer requests and Do It Day projects of the Causes.

Experience the Gift
We receive a gift when we give. We become part of the cycle of greater good. We find more purpose and satisfaction in our own lives when we have made a positive impact in the lives of others.
All South Africans can be involved: From July to August visit us here again to vote online for the Causes you would like to see at the 2006 Giving Exchange.

Exploring 21st century Corporate Social Investment solutions
The Giving Exchange provides the opportunity for the business and non profit or social profit sectors to address three major issues that compromise the effectiveness of corporate giving:

1. Transforming a lack of information into robust, clear, impact-based information flows
There is a lack of credible, accessible performance-based information. There is no best-practice standard of reporting that enables investors to compare relative social profit performance. Most social profit organisations are faced with a wide range of reporting requirements from donors, but these seldom require measuring qualitative as well as quantitative impact.

2. Transforming 'charity mentality' decision-making into value-driven allocation of resources
The decision to fund a particular organisation is still largely influenced by impressions, personal relationships and status. Thus, there is little incentive for social profit organisations to focus on practices that maximise impact. The relationship between business and social profit organisations needs to drive innovation, capacity-building, collaboration, partnerships and the establishment and sharing of successful, replicable development models. There needs to be an increasing focus on credible measurement of the development impact. Both business and social profit sectors need new ways of measuring both qualitative and quantitative value. Reporting needs to be improved so that social investors can make informed investment decisions based on performance and actual social return.

3. Transforming inflexibility and unresponsiveness into flexibility and responsiveness
Most social profit organisations face long response times from donors. Often it can take up to a year from initial proposal before they receive a grant. This hampers the effectiveness of the social profit sector, and curtails their ability to respond effectively to new and urgent demands that arise in their communities. At the same time, donors are seldom able to assess the impact of their investments on an up-to-date ongoing basis.
