On the 17th of November 2005, I took my Grade 4 learners on a field trip to Kirstenbosch Gardens and to the Planetarium.
At Kirstenbosch gardens, the 200 pupils looked at the different plants within their habitats. It was wonderful as the learners were able to see and touch the plants. All the plants of Kirstenbosch were labelled and they had information about their habitat and origin, which made it easy for the learners to understand. Before we knew it, it was time to board the buses and make our way to the Planetarium in the centre of Cape Town.
To accommodate the 200 learners, the planetarium staff split the learners up in to two groups. We watched the audio visual show that showed us the stars and the Planets. We saw how the moon revolves around the Earth. We also saw the distance between the Planets and how the earth looks like.
In the Museum within the Planetarium we saw and touched fossils of the different animals, some of which are extinct. We also watched a show on how Bushman used Plants to make Medicines and hunts.
They will be achieved by making food chain relating to plants & animals. They will also be investigating extreme habitats.
Learning Outcome 3: Science, society and the environment
The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships between science and technology, society and the environment. This learning Outcome was also achieved, by learning how the plants (environment) can be useful to make medicines (Science) and that these two can go hand in hand.
Language
Learning Outcome 1: Listening
The learners listen to a story about plants and they were able to relate the story to what they have leant in class.
Learning Outcome 2: Speaking
The learners asked question about the different plants that they are seeing and sow that what they are leaning in class can be seen and touched.
Learning Outcome 3: Reading and Viewing
The learners work through the display description information in order to compare the written information that they have with the visuals that they are seeing.
The learners who participated in this Teachers Dream clearly achieved a number of learning outcomes from various subject areas, like the history of the bushman which they leant in Social Science
As a school we would like to say thank-you to Chris and Coral Shortt the sponsors of this dream, as well as to the Shuttleworth Foundation and GreaterGood South Africa, without whom this would not have been possible. You made this dream a reality.
