It was a wonderful day for me when my dream comes true. This happened on the first of June this year. I took my grade 12 learners to Mahwaqa Centre for practical work. The learners were very much excited since they were taking a very important educational trip. That will help them in their Science education.
We arrived at the venue in time and we started with three experiments which were performed very well with useful discussions and very practical learnings. The three experiments were:
Conservation of momentum
What is Conservation of momentum is a fundamental concept of physics along with the conservation of energy and the conservation of mass. Momentum is defined to be the mass of an object multiplied by the velocity of the object. The conservation of momentum states that, within some problem domain, the amount of momentum remains constant; momentum is neither created nor destroyed, but only changed through the action of forces as described by Newton's laws of motion. The conservation of momentum holds for a collision involving any number of objects.
Ohm's Law
Ohm's Law deals with the relationship between voltage and current in an ideal conductor. Ohm's Law can be used to solve simple circuits. A complete circuit is one which is a closed loop. It contains at least one source of voltage.
Chemical equilibrium
Chemical equilibrium is the state in which the concentrations of the reactants and products have no net change over time.
Learning Areas and Learning Outcomes Archieved
Learning Area: Natural Science
Learning Outcome 1: Scientific Investigations
Was about checking whether momentum is conserved or not. Learners got a chance of measuring distance where the trolleys are going to be released. They were using a Maths knowledge of measuring the distances and also calculating the change in velocity using time and displacement measured. They learnt how to use the ticker timer and to analyse the tape. The necessary calculations on calculating the final velocity were done in groups. The results were discussed and one group got the correct answer. They found that momentum is conserved in a closed system.
Learning Outcome 2: Applying Scientific Knowledge
They learned to understand what is meant by proportionality where potential difference was found to proportional to the electric current. They were also using the Maths knowledge in calculating the ration of V and I which was found to be constant. This investigation proved that an Ohmic conductor obeys Ohms Law.
In the last experiment it was discovered that temperature of cobalt chloride were changed which also changed the colour of the solution from pink to blue.
The learners learned how to use the indicator. They said they can apply this knowledge in explaining why other thing can change their status and colour from time to time They got a chance of writing and discussing with other classmates. We did not get a chance to give them a short test due to time constrains.
Mrs Pam Robertson did that in good style and my job was just to take pictures of what was happening. I have learnt that learners learn easily with practical work rather than theory. I’m now faced with a challenge of doing practical work for most of my lessons so that learners can love and pass Physical Science.
All in all I just want to pass a word of appreciation to what you have done to us as a poor and disadvantaged school. The parents and the SGB are also appreciating this blessing. May God bless you all, and may you continue building future stars for this nation.
