I would like to thank you for the opportunity you’ve given to me and my learners of Moshoeshoe Primary School to be able to take such an amazing tour to Johannesburg. It was a memorable event that neither my learners nor I will ever forget.
It was for the first time in their lives that the learners were experiencing an all expenses paid trip and it was unbelievable to both learners and parents until the last day when they realized this was really happening.
Natural Science: Learning Outcomes 1 - Scientific Investigation, Learning Outcome 2 - Constructing Science Knowledge
We visited the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown. The learners got to investigate scientific inventions and were able to discover the practicality of the phenomena they learn about in class, e.g. magnetism, energy transfer etc.
We then visited the Johannesburg Planetarium at Wits University.
Maths: Learning Outcome 4 - Measurement.
The learners were able to view and understand the relationship between the moon, earth, sun and the stars. This covered the strand Planet Earth and Beyond in the Natural Science curriculum. They also managed to learn about the relationship between Science and Mathematics while learning about the time it takes to travel to each planet and what causes the differences. They also learnt to relate time to distance.
From the Planetarium it was lunchtime and Wits Steers were waiting for us. The learners could not believe what was in store for them. The burgers, chips, cold drinks and ice cream were very well prepared for us and boy, were we hungry!
After we had our lunch we were ready to go to the Johannesburg Zoo. It seemed like the animals were happy to see us too.
Learning Outcome 3 - Science society and the environment.
We were able to see a lot of animals, and some of the learners even commented that they never thought it possible to be able to see all these animals live. We also managed to learn about the behaviour of nocturnal animals.
The learners were over the moon and when it was time to go home everyone was satisfied and tired. The learners couldn’t stop thanking us as their educators.
I would like to thank Teacher’s Dream for allowing me an opportunity to make my learners happy and give them something they can take away with them wherever they go. Your support has not only made my learners happy, but has also developed me as and educator and given me more confidence and love for my work.
I would especially like to thank Teacher’s Dream staff member, Sis Princess. She has been giving me support throughout the project and it is highly appreciated.
