In a few lines, here is the story of a young genet we managed to save. When Mouchette was found in a garden, she was not bigger than the palm of your hand! We guess she was barely one day old, since she opened her eyes only after 12 days with us…
Michele gave her milk several times a day with a syringe, but we discovered very fast that Candy, one of our small dogs, acted very protectively towards the new baby, preventing the other dogs from approaching her. She took the genet under her wing, spending most of the time with her. After a few days, we realised that Candy was producing milk, especially for Mouchette! Thus, Mouchette grew up with Candy as a mom. Today, she is a pretty and very active genet lady, playing with dogs and jumping everywhere! She is still very attached to Candy, but her instinct seems to get the upper hand as she is now able to hunt crickets and worms on her own!
Mouchette is sponsored by Johann, a quadriplegic person from the Masonic Home, who was touched by her story. Every week, we send him some news and photos from her. Mouchette represents a success for Daktari for many reasons: we saved her from death and we shared a lot of emotion while looking after her. Moreover, she is an opportunity to collect data about animal behaviour and to create interactions with people interested in our field of actions.
