Newsletter | June 2006

Greetings

Youth and the environment are both important development themes in June. The 1st of June is International Children's Day; June 16th is South Africa's National Youth Day as well as UNICEF's International Day of the African Child. It is Early Childhood Development Awareness Week from 1st to 8th June, and you can find the full calendar of events across South Africa under Causes of the Month. It is also an important month for caring for the Earth - there is the UN's World Environment Day on the 5th of June, World Oceans Day on the 8th, and the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on the 17th.

A number of our Causes of the Month run programmes to get SA children and youth involved in caring for the Earth. Real-life experiences of Nature are an important part of fostering respect and appreciation of the planet, and they help children to comprehend our interdependence on a myriad of delicate eco-systems. We've also got a great environmentally friendly idea for celebrating Father's Day on the 18th of June - why not honour your Dad with a donation to plant a tree in the Goedgedacht Trust's Olive Peace Grove - see What are You Good For? below.

Theme of the month

Youth, Caring for the Earth
Growing up with an appreciation of Nature and a day-to-day awareness of mitigating adverse human impact on the planet will help the future decision-makers of our country to have a lifelong commitment to sustainable living. For the millions of urban South African children, and for all those living in poverty, it is easy to be disconnected from Nature and unaware of the complex, interdependent eco-systems that sustain all life on Earth.

Theme of the Month

Caring for the Earth for Future Generations

The aim of World Environment Day is to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance attention and action on pressing environmental issues. It is important to give a human face to environmental issues and to empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development. Communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues which will ensure we can facilitate a safer and more prosperous future for humankind. Key to this is promoting care of the environment to the children and youth of today.
