A number of our Causes of the Month run programmes to get SA children and youth involved in caring for the Earth. Real-life experiences of Nature are an important part of fostering respect and appreciation of the planet, and they help children to comprehend our interdependence on a myriad of delicate eco-systems. We've also got a great environmentally friendly idea for celebrating Father's Day on the 18th of June - why not honour your Dad with a donation to plant a tree in the Goedgedacht Trust's Olive Peace Grove - see What are You Good For? below. To make your experience of our Newsletters simpler, the content has been summarized below. Please click through to read more about a topic that is of interest to you. |

Theme of the MonthCaring for the Earth for Future GenerationsThe aim of World Environment Day is to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance attention and action on pressing environmental issues. It is important to give a human face to environmental issues and to empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development. Communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues which will ensure we can facilitate a safer and more prosperous future for humankind. Key to this is promoting care of the environment to the children and youth of today. Read More about World Environment Day on the 5th of June 2006. |

What Are You Good For?The 2006 Donate-A-Book CampaignIt's so easy to give a South African child a joyful experience of reading. The small gift of a book makes a big difference in the life of a child. You choose if you would like to donate a storybook for a pre-schooler, a book for a blind child or a starter library for a poor school. This campaign runs up until World Literacy Day in September. WishlistsPlant An Olive Tree in Goedgedacht Trust Peace Grove. A perfect gift for Father's Day! An Olive tree plus a dedication of 18 words costs R200. You will be supporting the Goedgedacht Trust projects that help educate children and provide opportunities to the many unskilled workers in the rural area to learn new skills and lead happier lives. Share your expertise. Cape Flats Nature Project has a variety of volunteer opportunities. This is a wonderful way to give. This organisation needs help ranging from digital photography training to financial planning, web design and marketing advice. Have you got spare Voyager points that you can donate to The Endangered Wildlife Trust? Three of their scientists have been offered an amazing opportunity to take part in a Vortex training course (modelling of the future prospects of threatened species) to be held in Mexico in October. They require the donation of 300 000 Voyager Miles to get them to the course and would sincerely appreciate all donations. Dreams looking for a dreammakerGetting out in the Environment - Educator, Jillian Wilmot of the Mary Kihn School for the Hearing Impaired has a dream to take 50 of her Foundation Phase learners to visit Monkey Town and the Aquarium so they can become more aware of our environment and understand that we need to appreciate and conserve it. Operation Sustainable Living - Educator, Matshidiso Mokoena of Boitsebelo Jun Tech School in the Free State wants to take 126 Grade 9 learners on a field trip to the wetlands at the Golden Gate Nature Reserve. Many of these learners have never seen a wetland before and this trip is part of a bigger project to understand what it means to live sustainably. The school also intends to involve these learners in developing a food garden. |
