Staff in our Guguletu office, who are involved in the HIV and AIDS lay counselling programme, would like to make an AIDS quilt. This quilt would both honour the work of the programme, as well as create a memorial to those in the community who have succumbed to the virus.
How will it be accomplished?
The lay counsellors in this programme work with individuals who visit the community health centres and clinics, and provide pre- and post-test counselling to those who wish to test for the virus. They then provide, where necessary, ongoing counselling and support to individuals and run support groups for mothers, teaching them skills in beadwork and gardening and providing treatment adherence support to those on anti-retroviral treatment. For this project, we would require two artistic, creative individuals to spend a day at our centre in Guguletu (at the Uluntu Centre in NY1). They would be required to paint ten fabric squares (a total of 4 - 5 sq metres) in, preferably South African colours, with relevant and appropriate designs that would both honour and remember those who have been affected by the HIV virus. We would require these two volunteers to have creative and artistic ideas, as well as fabric painting experience and ability. We anticipate that this would take around five hours to complete.
Beneficiaries: who are they?
This quilt would both honour the work of the programme, as well as create a memorial to those who have succumbed to the virus, in the community.
What are the key challenges you foresee?
Finding a unique, creative concept that will make this AIDS quilt a unique memorial to those in the Guguletu community who have been infected or affected by, or succumbed to, the HIV virus.
What will it take to achieve this?
The costs involved would include: Fabric paint: 8 colours – R400
