A vegetable garden and to paint our crisis intake centre. |
|
A beautiful, interesting, vegetable garden with an erected fence to protect the area from the children. Our crisis centre which consists of 4 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 shower, passage and lounge area were all beautifully painted. A retired pharmacist heard me on the radio, Cape Talk and responded by donating some beautifully framed pictures that he himself came to mount for us. |

For the garden it took a hard working, energetic, dedicated group from RCS to weed, prepare and plant in very hot weather. It also took two ladies from Mosaic and another gentleman who are experienced gardeners to guide and help the RCS team along the way. Michael Doubell erected the fence with the help of Felicien, our driver/maintenance man on the day. Another team worked in the crisis centre, men on the side of the road and a very hard working experienced volunteer (Ilza) from Rondebosch. There were some volunteers from America, Canada and Camps Bay that also got stuck in. Some prepared a light lunch for the workers. Some served cold drinks. There were approximately 30 volunteers for the day. |

Greater Good sponsored some of the seedlings, the fencing and poles, bonemeal, a watering can, paint brushes, rollers, turps, paint brushes and they paid the wages for some of the painters. Roland from Pro Vending donated the paint for the Crisis Centre. Simon Says delivered a truck load of organis compost. They donate a bag of compost to Carehaven for every 250 bags they sell and this is an on-going donation. Mark Blood is our contact person at "Simon Says". We also received curtains from Greater Goods/Woolworths for the crisis centre. Michael and Jane (two volunteers from Campsbay) donated quite a lot towards the food. Andrea Olivier donated the juices for the day. |

As a result of the Do-It-Day, I believe we have formed some long term relationships, especially with the RCS team. There was on-going communication with the Greater Good team and some of them came to vew the projects on the day and I believe they saw the need, saw what we do, felt the passion we have in making a difference in the lives of the abused women and their children and as a result, I believe they will continue to support us in whatever way they possibly can. It's definitely not just a day where the projects happen and then it's all forgotten about. I learned a lot from the experience. Thank you to all involved on the day. A BIG THANK YOU to the Greater Good Team for an effort well done. Also thank you to Cape Talk for all the exposure and also to John Maythem who couldn't make the day but sent a donation. |
