A Career in the Arts : Wynberg Secondary

Educator & School:  Mrs Trish Notcutt from Wynberg Secondary School, Wittebome

On arrival at the theatre the students were taken to the auditorium of the opera house where the senior lighting manger, Nicholas, gave an in-depth presentation on many varied jobs available in live theatre.  This was made much more exciting as the respective people were working in front of us constructing set, rigging lights and setting up sound equipment, so we were able to experience it first-hand.

We were then taken to the smaller theatre and we were able to have an informal and very informative question time between the learners and Nicholas.  He also showed us the backstage areas, the various lighting rigs, the stage, and dressing room areas.  By the time we had finished "picking his brain" all of us were astounded as to how many possible jobs are available in the entertainment industry, and it was quite apparent that one needed to be a motivated, outgoing, problem-solving individual in order to survive in the Arts world.

The tour's "Cherry on the top" was when we were given the opportunity of viewing a dance class taking place in the Jazz art studios.  This was especially exciting as the learners are all studying Dance and could experience the professional world of dance for themselves.  The learners were also able to connect with two past pupils from their school who had studied dance with this education and who are now in the professional dance company.

Thank you so much for making this dream comes true!!

The delight of the Learners

First and foremost I would like to thank my Dance Teacher, Mrs Notcutt, for taking us to Arts Cape, I have learned so much on the day and now I am thinking about my career because there are many jobs opportunities in the arts department (behind the scenes) like sound engineering, financial management (fan management!) light engineering, etc.  Although they don't get paid big salaries, they don't have medical aid and pension fund, they do their job because they love it.  And when I finish my matric I shall go to jazz art because I want to be a dance choreographer - Lana Zifo

Going to Artscape was the most experiencing challenge for me because I got to learn a lot of things in the Arts industry - Juliet Moncho

Thanks for making our day possible.  I really enjoy my day.  I really learnt a lot and the work career also inspired me - Roselda Ludick

Thank you very much!  It was a good experience because if you work in theatre you might also be able to learn about career opportunities and also learning how to become maybe a actor, dance or even a professional singer - Tanya Smith

I would just like to take the time to thank you.  I have learned a lot about the theatre and how you can get work in the theatre - Barbara-Anne Reynolds.

After visiting Artscape and seeing all the hard work that goes into putting a show together, but it's also about the determination to make a show a success and being able to travel overseas.  I've decided to pursue a career in dancing.  Thank you for the experience - Tanya de Jongh

I've learned a lot on that day we went to Arts Cape.  I've learned how a theatre looks like and how to work with it.  I've seen how they make kind of lights.  And most of the things I've seen in the theatre were very interesting.  And the most interesting thing was the contemporary dance. I was so happy to see the African youth doing contemporary dance - Precious Anga Matshaya.

Firstly, I would like to say that it was a very interesting experience.  I thought I knew how thing worked in the theatre but little did I know until now.  I never knew that theatre was such a huge environment and that so much people could "fit" in there - Linda Jeftha

I would love to have a career in teaching dance to others so that they can experience the beauty, determination and great fun.  I'm glad I stay in South Africa because the diverse culture shows in energy in what we as South Africans do.  I would love to say thank you for allowing us to experience it - Nicole Abrahams

I learnt that there are many opportunity in the theatre.  You can also work in the production side or doing some show and you work in the lighting side.  There are many jobs in the theatre you can experience - Zandile Maqwatini

For me to go to Arts Cape was such a great opportunity to learn about my career.  What I wanted the most was to know how to be on theatre.  I've learnt so many things about the theatre.  The most interesting was the contemporary dance I was so impressed to see young African dancers - Zola Conyana
