Our books arrived from Caxtons at the end of the 2nd term and we set about labeling and accessing them. (photos when film is used up ). The books are now being covered by some parents and then the barcodes will be put on.
The children were retested at the beginning of the term and letters sent to parents for an information and demonstration meeting which was held on 10 August (photo later). They seemed delighted and relieved that help could come their way without them having to outlay a lot of money. I demonstrated exactly how they would be coaching their child at home by using an invited Gr 4 child(photo later). I shall be calling the group of children(about 20 to start and then we shall feed another 20 into the system as the books become available) to my classroom this week to chat to them as some of them feel that they will be teased about having to have extra help. This is unfortunately one of the types of peer pressure that is around today. When these children have been in the programme for a couple of weeks I shall ask them to write to you to tell you how they are finding it.
The parents who now wish for their child to be helped are now enrolling and we will be issuing the first books on 29 August .
I feel quite excited- ideally we shall from now on pick up all our weak readers by Gr 3 and introduce them to the programme and thus, in the years that follow, will have very few children in the upper classes who are below their expected reading age. Thank you that Teachers’ Dream has made this possible!
When next I report to you the children should have their books and be reading!
